Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Dacia

Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Dacia is the UNESCO site that brings together the remains of the Dacian Limes, the frontier of the Roman province of Dacia. It was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2024 and comprises 277 component parts in 16 counties, with a protected area of almost 1,492 hectares. The Limes was in use from 106 to 271. It ran for more than a thousand kilometres along the western, northern and eastern borders of the province, starting from the Danube and returning to it: it crossed the Transylvanian Plateau and, in the south, followed the Olt River across the Muntenia plain. Dacia was the only Roman province lying entirely north of the Danube. The frontier was not a continuous wall but a network of military installations: legionary and auxiliary forts, small fortifications, watchtowers, earthen ramparts and temporary camps. It defended the province, watched the movements of the peoples beyond the border and secured access to gold and salt resources. Many component parts lie in rural areas, on hills and in forests, and some survive only as traces in the ground. Among the best known are Porolissum (Moigrad, Sălaj County), Apulum (Alba Iulia), Tibiscum (Jupa, Caraș-Severin County) and the Drobeta fort, next to the ruins of Trajan's Bridge at Drobeta-Turnu Severin.
