Borsec Resort

Borsec is a historic spa and climatic resort located in the depression of the same name, at an altitude of between approximately 850 and 950 metres, in the north-east of Harghita County, in the Eastern Carpathians, at the junction of the Munții Giurgeu, Munții Bistriței and Munții Călimani. Known since the early nineteenth century and with waters used for therapeutic purposes since the second half of the sixteenth century, Borsec developed around its rich mineral water resources — carbonated, bicarbonate, calcic and magnesian springs — which constitute its principal treasure. The resort's reputation is tied to the exceptional quality of its waters, recognised through numerous international distinctions: a gold medal at the International Fair in Vienna (1873), where Borsec water received the honorary title of "Queen of Mineral Waters", followed by awards in Berlin and Trieste (1876) and in Paris (1878). A remarkable historical fact is that, with the development of glass production in the area around 1804–1806, the bottling of mineral water began at Borsec — considered the first bottled mineral water in Europe. In addition to the springs, the area features natural mofettes (carbon dioxide emanations) and strongly ionised air, natural curative factors traditionally recommended for cardiovascular, digestive and metabolic conditions. Beyond its spa value, Borsec retains the charm of a classic nineteenth-century resort, with small, attractive villas — some listed as architectural monuments — and springs developed in a traditional style, such as Izvorul Străvechi. The natural setting — spruce and fir forests, mountain landscapes and points of interest such as the travertine quarries and nearby rock formations — completes the resort's profile as a destination for health and relaxation. Recognised as a tourist resort of national interest, Borsec remains a landmark of Romania's balneary heritage.
