Zmeuret Peak

Zmeuret Peak is the highest point of the Munții Zmeuretului, a massif of modest altitude — 1,136 m — belonging to the Carpații de Curbură, in the north-east of Prahova County, on the border with Buzău County. The massif presents itself as a relief step between the proper mountain zone and the Subcarpathian hills, acting as a connecting element between the Subcarpații Prahovei and the mountain zone of Buzău. The village of Zmeuret, sharing the same name, belongs to the commune of Starchiojd and is situated at the foot of the massif, at an average altitude of approximately 596 m. The area is surrounded by other Subcarpathian ridges — Gămălia (1,432 m), Vârful lui Țigan (1,081 m) — which shape a hilly-mountain landscape of picturesque character, with traditional Wallachian architecture specific to the ethnographic sub-region of Starchiojd. Access to the peak is from the commune of Bătrâni, situated at approximately 500 m altitude, at the foot of the massif. The trail climbs through beech forests — the dominant species on the northern and western slopes — and crosses clearings with wide panoramas towards the Drajna-Chiojd depression and the massifs of Buzău County. Along the trail stands the Crucea de la Zmeuret, a traditional local landmark visible from several points in the valley. The massif is crossed by the Bătrâneanca stream (Stâmnicul), which drains the area towards the Subcarpathian valleys of Prahova. The trail difficulty is low to moderate, with no technical sections, suitable for hikers of any experience level. It represents an ideal destination for those seeking tranquillity and unspoilt nature away from the busy tourist routes of Prahova.
