Vârful Siriu

Vârful Siriu is the highest point of Masivul Siriu, reaching an altitude of 1,657 m, and stands as one of the main landmarks of the Carpații de Curbură in Buzău County. Masivul Siriu is bounded to the north by Valea Buzăului, to the south by Depresiunea Întorsura Buzăului, and forms part of a relief shaped predominantly in Cretaceous flysch — alternating sandstones, marls, and conglomerates. The fragile geological structure has given rise to a dynamic relief, with steep slopes and active erosion phenomena, particularly visible on the eastern flank. From a biological standpoint, the area is partially included within the protected zone of Parcul Natural Munții Buzăului, sheltering spruce and beech forests, subalpine meadows at altitudes above 1,400 m, and representative Carpathian fauna — brown bear, wolf, red deer, and lynx. From the summit, a wide panorama opens over Depresiunea Brașovului, Vrancea, and the main ridges of the Carpații de Curbură, with Vârful Penteleu (1,772 m) visible to the north. At the foot of the massif lies Lacul de acumulare Siriu, built between 1978 and 1984 on the Buzău river, with a capacity of 125 million m³ — one of the largest reservoirs in Buzău County and a complementary attraction to the mountain trail. Masivul Siriu is worth visiting for its combination of an accessible mountain route, sweeping panoramic views, and the proximity of the reservoir, all reachable from the same area.
