Vârful Penteleu is the highest point of the Munții Buzăului, reaching an altitude of 1,772 m, and ranks among the highest peaks in the Carpații de Curbură. It is part of the Penteleu Massif, within the Carpații Orientali, situated at the eastern edge of the Munții Buzăului, in Buzău County. The massif is bounded by the Bâsca Mare valley corridor, which separates it from the Podu Calului massif, and by the Bâsca Mică valley corridor, which separates it from Munții Vrancei, with its main ridge oriented in a north–south direction. The geology of the massif is dominated by flysch-type rocks — Cretaceous and Paleogene sandstones and argillaceous schists — which determine the morphology of its long ridges and slopes. The massif includes several peaks exceeding 1,500 m, among them Viforâta, Corâiu, Ciulianoș, and Crucea Fetei, with Penteleu being the highest. Extensive areas are covered with beech and spruce forests, above which stretch wide mountain meadows known for their pastures. The fauna includes species characteristic of the montane zone, among them the brown bear and the chamois. On the summit there are boundary markers and signs indicating the highest point of the Munții Buzăului, and near the ridge a meteorological station operates at approximately 1,680 m, which also serves as a shelter in adverse weather. The peak, which is relatively flat and broad, offers an open panoramic view of the Carpații de Curbură, from Munții Siriu and Podu Calului to Munții Vrancei, and in good visibility more distant massifs can also be distinguished, such as Ciucaș.
