Vârful Negoiu

Vârful Negoiu is the second highest peak in Romania, with an altitude of 2,535 m, located in the Munții Făgăraș, Sibiu County. It forms part of the main ridge of the Carpații Meridionali, which represents the most massive mountain chain in Romania, stretching approximately 70 km along the east–west axis. From a geological standpoint, the Munții Făgăraș are composed predominantly of Precambrian crystalline schists, metamorphosed under conditions of high pressure and temperature, which accounts for the steep relief and rocky slopes characteristic of the area. Vârful Negoiu is distinguished by its well-preserved glacial relief — glacial cirques, moraines and glacial lakes formed during the last glaciation, approximately 10,000–20,000 years ago. The alpine flora includes species typical of the alpine belt, among them edelweiss, Soldanella and rhododendron. The fauna includes the chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), an emblematic wildlife species of the Carpathians, as well as the golden eagle. The main access route follows the marked trail from Cabana Negoiu, situated at approximately 1,546 m altitude, with a one-way walking time of 4–5 hours. Another frequently used trail starts from the Valea Bâlea, along the main ridge. The ascent involves technical sections with chains fixed into the rock.
