Vârful Muntele Mare
Vârful Muntele Mare, at an altitude of 1,826 m, is the highest peak of the Muntele Mare massif and the third highest in the Western Carpathians, after Vârful Bihor (Cucurbăta Mare) and Vlădeasa. Unlike most mountain summits, the area around the peak has the appearance of a broad plateau rather than a sharp pinnacle.
Vârful Muntele Mare is the highest point of the Gilău-Muntele Mare mountain group within the Munții Apuseni, reaching an altitude of 1,826 m. The massif is bounded by Someșul Rece to the north, the Feneș and Iara valleys to the east, the Arieș to the south and the upper courses of the Bistra and Someșul Rece to the west.
The massif is made mostly of crystalline schists, with an L-shaped granite body in its central part. Around the summit lies a high, almost flat surface, largely waterlogged, with extensive oligotrophic peat bogs.
The peak lies on the border of Cluj and Alba counties, with the summit itself situated in Alba County. The most frequented access route starts from the resort of Muntele Băișorii, in Cluj County. The panorama from the summit encompasses the Southern Carpathians, the Munții Rodnei and the Transylvanian plain.
Did you know that the Muntele Mare plateau holds oligotrophic peat bogs, locally called "molhașuri", and that one of them, Molhașurile Căpățânei, is a botanical reserve?
