Vârful Muntele Mare

Vârful Muntele Mare is the highest point of the Gilău-Muntele Mare mountain group within the Munții Apuseni, reaching an altitude of 1,826 m. The massif covers a considerable area, stretching over 40 km from west to east and approximately 30 km from north to south, bounded by Someșul Rece to the north, Iara to the east, Arieș to the south and Bistra to the west. The principal distinguishing feature of the massif is its geological foundation — the central zone is occupied by the largest granite intrusion in the Munții Apuseni, formed approximately 300 million years ago and known as the Granitul de Muntele Mare. This gives the area around the summit the appearance of a high-altitude plain, partially marshy and covered with mosses and dwarf pine. The peak lies on the border of Cluj and Alba counties, with the summit itself situated in Alba County. The most frequented access route starts from the resort of Muntele Băișorii, in Cluj County. The panorama from the summit encompasses the Southern Carpathians, the Munții Rodnei and the Transylvanian plain. It is well worth visiting for its alpine plateau landscape, which is rarely encountered in the Apuseni, and for its diverse wildlife, including bears, wild boar, roe deer and eagles.
