Vârful Moldoveanu, the Highest Peak in Romania

Vârful Moldoveanu is the highest point in Romania, at an altitude of 2,544 m, located in the Munții Făgăraș, Argeș County. It forms part of the main ridge of the Southern Carpathians, in the central-northern sector, and is flanked by Vârful Negoiu (2,544 m — the second highest peak) to the west and Vârful Vistea Mare (2,527 m) to the east. Vârful Vistea Mare and Moldoveanu effectively form a single massif, with an elevation difference of only 17 metres. From a geological perspective, the Făgăraș massif is composed predominantly of metamorphic rocks — crystalline schists, gneisses and amphibolites — formed through intense tectonic processes that took place approximately 500–600 million years ago. Glacial landforms are dominant: glacial cirques, hanging valleys and glacial lakes characterise both the northern and southern slopes. Subalpine and alpine vegetation includes grasslands of Festuca supina and Carex curvula, dense dwarf pine scrub and saxicolous lichens. Wildlife includes the chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) and various mustelid species. The most commonly used access route starts from Cabana Bâlea Lac (2,034 m), reachable via DN7C (the Transfăgărășan road), along the trail marked with a red stripe that follows the main ridge eastward, with an estimated duration of 8–10 hours return for experienced mountaineers. The route involves significant elevation changes and exposed sections, and is not recommended for beginners. An alternative route ascends from Valea Arpășelului, on the northern slope, from the village of Arpașu de Sus. The summit offers a 360-degree panoramic view over the entire Southern Carpathian chain and, in favourable visibility conditions, as far as the Wallachian Plain.
