Vârful Iezerul Mare

Vârful Iezerul Mare, at an altitude of 2,462 m, is the second highest peak in the Munții Iezer-Păpușa range, after Vârful Roșu (2,469 m), located in Argeș County, in the central-southern part of the Carpații Meridionali. The Iezer-Păpușa massif extends between Valea Râului Târgului to the north, Valea Dâmboviței to the east, and Valea Râului Doamnei to the west. From a geological standpoint, the massif is composed predominantly of Precambrian crystalline schists with granitic intrusions, giving the relief a pronounced alpine character, with glacial cirques, narrow ridges, and lakes of glacial origin. Below Vârful Iezerul Mare, at an altitude of 2,135 m, lies Lacul Iezeru Mare — the massif's only glacial lake, set in a glacial cirque enclosed by bare ridges. Near the lake stands Refugiul Iezer (2,165 m). The area's fauna includes the chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), brown bear, wolf, and golden eagle. Subalpine and alpine vegetation is dominated by dwarf pine scrub, alpine meadows, and rock-face plant communities typical of the alpine zone. Access to Lacul Iezer and Vârful Iezerul Mare is possible from the town of Rucăr via the blue dot-marked trail — approximately 4 hours to the lake — or from Câmpulung Muscel via Cabana Voina on the blue cross-marked trail — approximately 5 hours. From the refuge, the ascent to the summit takes an additional approximately 30–40 minutes.
