Vârful Detunata Flocoasă
Detunata Flocoasă (1,265 m) is the taller and more discreet sister of Detunata Goală, located just 1.5 km away, in the commune of Bucium, Alba County. Covered by a dense spruce forest that conceals its basalt columns, Detunata Flocoasă offers a wilder, more intimate experience — for those who want to discover the Apuseni beyond the well-trodden trails.

Detunata Flocoasă is the highest of the two volcanic peaks within the Detunatele nature reserve, reaching an altitude of 1,265 m, compared to 1,168 m for Detunata Goală. Located on the territory of the commune of Bucium, in the Munții Metaliferi, Alba County, just 1.5 km from its more famous counterpart, Detunata Flocoasă owes its name to the dense spruce forest that covers it from top to bottom — "flocoasă" meaning shaggy or fluffy with firs, in the local speech of the Moți people. Unlike Detunata Goală, where the basalt columns are freely exposed to view, here the vegetation partially conceals the geological formations, creating a mysterious and less accessible atmosphere. There is no officially marked trail to Detunata Flocoasă — those who make it here are experienced hikers, curious to discover what lies beyond the classic route. It is precisely this lack of tourist infrastructure that preserves its authenticity and wild charm. The prismatic hexagonal basalt columns are the same as those at Detunata Goală — formed through the slow cooling of volcanic magma several million years ago — yet the spruce forest gives them an entirely different setting: darker, more secretive, closer to the world of Moți legends. Together, the two Detunate form one of the most valuable nature reserves in Alba County and throughout the Apuseni — a place where geology, nature and legend intertwine in a truly unique spectacle.
