Cindrel Peak is the highest point of the Cindrel Mountains (also called the Cândrel or Cibin Mountains), a group of the Southern Carpathians bounded by the Sebeș river, the Sadu river and the Transylvanian Plateau. The summit is 2,244 m high. The Cindrel Mountains have broad, gentle ridges, made mostly of crystalline schists, and in their central part a glacial relief with cirques holding glacial lakes. On the northern slope of the peak lies the Iezerele Cindrelului nature reserve, with the lakes Iezerul Mare and Iezerul Mic, and the high area belongs to the "Cindrel Natural Park" protected area and the Frumoasa Natura 2000 site. At the northern foot of the range lies the ethnographic area of Mărginimea Sibiului, and the Păltiniș resort is halfway between Rășinari and Cindrel Peak. The summit is reached by marked trails, including the route through the Șteflești saddle and the long trail from the village of Jina over Guga Mare and Frumoasa peaks.
