Turnul Sfatului

Turnul Sfatului is one of the most representative medieval monuments in Sibiu, situated in Piața Mică, in the historic centre of the city. Originally built in the 13th century, the tower was extended and reinforced over several centuries, reaching its current height of approximately 23 metres. The rectangular stone and brick structure served various administrative and military functions over time, including roles as a watchtower and repository for the city's archives. Its name derives from the fact that the meetings of the city council — the Sfatul orășenesc, the representative institution of the Saxon medieval administration in Sibiu — were held within its walls. The tower connects Piața Mare and Piața Mică through a vaulted passage at its base, an opening that remains heavily used by pedestrian traffic today. During periods of conflict, the tower formed an integrated element of the city's fortification system, which at its peak comprised approximately 39 towers and bastions. Today, the building houses exhibition sections of the Muzeul de Istorie Sibiu, with collections covering the medieval and modern periods of the region. Access is from Piața Mică, in the pedestrian centre of the city, approximately 500 metres from Gara Sibiu via several main thoroughfares. It is well worth visiting for its documented architectural significance, for the perspective it offers on the evolution of medieval urban administration, and for its direct connection to the Saxon fortification network, one of the best preserved in Romania.
