The theatre stands at 1 Piața Ștefan cel Mare, in the centre of Piatra Neamț, close to the Curtea Domnească ensemble. The building went up between 1929 and 1947, to a design that the List of Historic Monuments attributes to the architect Roger Bolomey. Besides the main auditorium, the theatre has the „Corneliu-Dan Borcia” Studio, the Rotonda Hall, redecorated by the visual artist Saddo, and a multimedia room. The first performance on the Piatra Neamț stage, Molière's „Vicleniile lui Scapin” (Scapin's Deceits), took place on 3 October 1958, when the company was a section of the Bacău State Theatre. In 1961 it became the Piatra Neamț State Theatre, and in April 1967 it received the name Teatrul Tineretului. Actors who have performed here include Florin Piersic, Leopoldina Bălănuță, Mitică Popescu, Horațiu Mălăele and Maia Morgenstern. In 1997 the theatre's education department started a theatre-in-education programme, the first of its kind in a Romanian theatre. The theatre organises the Piatra Neamț Theatre Festival, whose first edition opened on 24 June 1969 as a festival of productions for children and young people. The festival has been international since 1992 and has been held under the high patronage of the Romanian National Commission for UNESCO since 1993; no editions took place in 2002 or in 2012-2014, when the building was renovated. The theatre also offers guided tours of the building and, since 2025, holds „Ziua Teatrului Tineretului” (Youth Theatre Day) on 3 October. The building is a listed historic monument, LMI code NT-II-m-B-10572. The theatre is a cultural institution funded by the Neamț County Council.
