Săliștea de Sus lies in the south-east of the Maramureș Depression, at the north-eastern foot of the Țibleș Mountains, on the upper course of the Iza river. It is first documented in 1365 (as Keethzeleste) and was granted town status by Law no. 83/2004. At the 2021 census it had 4,856 inhabitants. The town's coat of arms recalls the noble Iuga and Vlad families and the salt mine that operated on Cetățuie hill between 1650 and 1700, of which a salt-water spring remains. The wooden church of St Nicholas of the Nistorești, on Dr. Iuga Gavrilă street, a class A historic monument (LMI code MM-II-m-A-04633), dates from around 1680. It takes its name from the wealthy family, descended from a man named Nistor, who built it on high ground in the upper part of the village. The rectangular altar and the nave have semicircular vaults, the nave being raised so that the roof has a double skirt, and the bell tower rises above the flat-ceilinged narthex. Surviving wall paintings include the Last Judgement and the Parable of the Ten Virgins in the narthex and the Resurrection on the vault; several icons are attributed to the painter Alexandru Ponehalschi, active here around 1772. The wooden church of St Nicholas of the Buleni, on Bâleni street, is also a class A historic monument (LMI code MM-II-m-A-04635) and has a silhouette similar to that of the Nistorești church. The List of Historic Monuments dates it to 1736, while Wikipedia gives 1717. Also in Săliștea de Sus, a house from 1740-1750 is a class B historic monument (LMI code MM-II-m-B-04634).
