Păltiniș (German: Hohe Rinne) lies in the Cindrel Mountains at about 1,440 m, 35 km south-west of Sibiu, in a conifer forest. It is a component locality of the city of Sibiu, although its territory is not contiguous with the city, and at the 2021 census it had 11 permanent residents.
The idea of a climatic resort near Sibiu was publicly launched on 27 March 1885 by the army doctor Julius Pildner von Steinburg, a member of the Transylvanian Carpathian Association (SKV), and in the same year Emperor Franz Joseph and the crown prince donated 300 guilders. In 1890 Gustav Conrad, the forester of Cristian, proposed the site beside a spring that the local German speakers called the "upper trough" (Hohe Rinne), which gave the German name; the Romanian name comes from the nearby Păltiniș peak. The Tyrolean-style Kurhaus was built from the spring of 1892 on land belonging to the commune of Cristian and opened on 10 June 1894.
In the following years came the Tourist House (1895), the Villa "Monaco" (1897), the Doctors' House and the Military Sanatorium (1898), and between 1899 and 1902 the road from Rășinari to Păltiniș was built. From 1894 to 1939 a local tourist post operated here. The ensemble "Kurhaus, villas 1, 2, 3, 4" in the centre of the resort, dated by the List of Historic Monuments to 1897, is a historic monument (LMI code SB-II-a-B-12498).
The philosopher Constantin Noica settled at Păltiniș in 1975 and held here the seminars known as the "Păltiniș School"; he is buried at the hermitage at the entrance to the resort. Păltiniș is a destination for skiing in winter and hiking in summer, with marked trails to the Cibin Gorge, whose path was opened on 7 July 1904, and to the Bătrâna saddle.
