Olimp Resort

Olimp is a locality within the municipality of Mangalia, Constanța County, situated on the Black Sea coast, 38 km south of Constanța and 9 km north of the centre of Mangalia. Built in 1971–1972 as part of the socialist programme to expand coastal tourism, the resort entered the tourist circuit in 1972 alongside Neptun, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. During the communist period it was regarded as the luxury resort of the Romanian Riviera, reserved for the party nomenclature and distinguished guests — including general secretaries of Western communist parties — and was renowned for its heliomarine cures and specialised medical treatments within the Ana Aslan Institute programme, which attracted thousands of foreign tourists each year. The resort consists of two distinct hotel complexes: Olimp Sud, with stepped architecture descending from the cliff, and Olimp Nord, featuring hotels named after the historical regions of Romania — Maramureș, Crișana, Muntenia, Moldova, Transilvania and Oltenia — each rising to 14 floors. The beach stretches between Neptun to the north and Jupiter to the south. It is wider in the area of the Amfiteatru-Panoramic-Belvedere complex, where artificial coves have been created to prevent cliff erosion, and narrows towards the south. In recent years the beach has benefited from substantial widening and sand replenishment works. The sea is recognised for its clarity and turquoise hues, fed by currents from the southern part of the coastline. To the west, the resort is bordered by Pădurea Comorova, which gives it a distinctive microclimate with air rich in phytoncides and iodine — a distinguishing feature compared to other, more crowded resorts along the coastline.
