Mangalia Resort

Mangalia is the municipality at the southern tip of the Romanian Black Sea coast, in Constanța County, with a documented history of over 2,600 years. Founded in the 6th century BC by Dorian settlers from Heracleea Pontica under the name Callatis — the only Doric colony on the Pontic shore — it functioned as an important commercial and cultural centre of Antiquity, minting its own coins from the 3rd century BC. The remains of the Callatis fortress are scattered throughout the modern urban perimeter: the enclosure wall visible in the lobby of Hotel President, the north-west corner of the fortress with a defensive tower, a Syrian-type basilica, and two necropolises. The Esmahan Sultan Mosque, built in 1575 using stone from the Callatis fortress, is the oldest Islamic place of worship in Romania in continuous use. Lake Mangalia, situated between the resorts of Saturn and Venus, is a coastal lagoon with brackish water and sapropelic mud with therapeutic properties, used in the balneoclimatic treatments of the area. The Mangalia marina is one of the most active on the Romanian coast, with facilities for yachts and leisure craft. The Mangalia Shipyard, built in the 1970s, is one of the largest in Romania, specialising in large ocean-going vessels. Nearby is the Mangalia Stud Farm — one of the largest in south-eastern Europe, with over 350 thoroughbred horses, where horse races are organised in summer. The municipality also hosts the military naval base of the Romanian Naval Forces. The beaches within the urban perimeter and in the adjacent resorts of Saturn and Venus stretch along approximately 15 km of continuous coastline.
