Gura Humorului lies in southern Bukovina, on the eastern edge of the Bukovina Obcinas, in the Humor depression, where the Humor river joins the Moldova, at about 470 m. It is about 35 km from both Suceava and Câmpulung Moldovenesc, on European route E576 (DN 17), while the DJ 177 leads to Mănăstirea Humorului. It has two railway stations on the Suceava-Vatra Dornei line. At the 2021 census it had 13,278 inhabitants. The town also includes the former village of Voroneț, now a district.
The first documentary mention is a charter from the chancery of Ștefan cel Mare dated 26 February 1490. After 1775, under Austrian rule, the settlement became a small market town (1820), a market town (1880), a district seat (1893) and a town (1904). Germans, Poles and Jews settled here after 1800; at the 1930 census the town had 6,042 inhabitants, most of them Germans and Jews. Between the wars it was the seat of Humor district in Câmpulung county. In 2005 it was declared a tourist resort of national interest.
Its most important monument is Voroneț Monastery, founded by Ștefan cel Mare in 1488, about 4 km from the centre, one of the painted churches of Moldavia on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The town also has the Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity (1811), the Orthodox churches of Saints Constantine and Helen (1862) and of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel (1876-1885), the Great Synagogue (1871), the eighteenth-century Jewish cemetery, the town hall (1901), the courthouse (1904) and the Museum of Bukovina Folk Customs.
In the neighbouring commune of Mănăstirea Humorului, north of the town, stands Humor Monastery, also a UNESCO site, which makes the town a base for visiting the painted monasteries of the area.
