Schitul Sfântul Apostol Toma Brașov

Mănăstirea Sfântul Apostol Toma is an Orthodox Old Rite (Old Style) monastic establishment located in the municipality of Brașov, in the Răcădău neighbourhood, at 75A Strada Constantin Dobrogeanu-Gherea. Unlike most churches in the area, which belong to the Romanian Orthodox Church (New Style), this monastery is part of the Metropolis of the Old Rite Christian Faith in Romania — a community that preserves the Julian (Old) calendar and the liturgical traditions predating the calendar reform. The monastery was founded in 1998, at the request of Old Rite faithful from Brașov and the surrounding areas. Construction began essentially from scratch — the first monks, among them Archimandrite Visarion, recount that at the outset the site was nothing but "mounds of earth." The principal feast day is dedicated to Saint Apostle Thomas, one of the twelve apostles, celebrated in the Orthodox calendar on 6 October. The complex includes the monastery church and the outbuildings of a small monastic community. The establishment draws worshippers of both the Old Style and New Style, from Brașov and other regions. Over the years, the monastery has hosted pilgrimages and miracle-working icons brought from abroad, such as the Icon of the Mother of God "Umilenie" brought from Russia. The monastery lies within the urban perimeter of Brașov and is accessible by public transport or on foot from the Răcădău area.
