Salina Turda

Salina Turda is one of the oldest and best-preserved salt mines in Europe, located in the city of Turda, Cluj County, at Aleea Durgăului nr. 7. Salt extraction in this area dates back to the Roman period, and archaeological evidence attests to continuous mining activity from at least the 17th century. Active mining operations continued until 1932, after which the complex was gradually converted into a tourist attraction, inaugurated in its current form in 1992. The underground complex comprises several galleries and chambers, the most notable of which are the Rudolf Mine, the Terezia Mine, and the Franz Josef Mine. The Rudolf Mine, the most impressive in terms of scale, has a depth of approximately 42 metres, a diameter of 50 metres at the base of the main chamber, and a total underground void height of around 90 metres. The constant interior temperature is 11–12°C, with a relative humidity of approximately 80% — conditions that give the air a high concentration of saline aerosols, which are used in halotherapeutic treatments. Inside the mine, visitors will find an underground lake on which they can row boats, a mini-golf course, a cycling track, and a carousel, all situated within the cavities of the former workings. The site is accessed from the centre of Turda, approximately 2 km from the main square, via DJ107R. Salina Turda is well worth a visit for its unique combination of geological and historical value as an authentic mining site, the impressive dimensions of its underground chambers, and the therapeutic options recommended for people with respiratory conditions.
