Tigăile din Ciucaș Reserve

The Tigăile din Ciucaș Reserve is a protected area of national interest, of geological, geomorphological, floristic and scenic value, covering 3 ha in Măneciu commune, located in the heart of Munții Ciucaș, part of the Carpații de Curbură, on the border between Brașov and Prahova counties, near the climatic resort of Cheia. Tigăile Mari, together with Tigăile Mici, represent the most spectacular rock formations of the massif and the true symbol of Ciucaș. Viewed from Valea Teleajenului, the massif resembles a fortress, with the Tigăile formations serving as its stone bastions. The formations are carved in conglomerates, rocks composed of gravels, crystalline fragments and limestone blocks. The differential action of erosion on these rocks has created a fascinating ruiniform relief: towers, columns, stone mushrooms and sphinxes. The name "Tigăile" derives from the concave shape of certain rock structures, resembling cooking vessels. Vârful Tigăile Mari reaches approximately 1,845 m, in the vicinity of Vârful Ciucaș (1,954 m), the highest peak in the massif. The reserve also protects a rich flora of rocky outcrops and alpine meadows: edelweiss (characteristic of Munții Ciucaș) and mountain iris, alongside shrubs of bilberry, juniper, cowberry and smârdar (mountain peony). The fauna includes brown bear, wolf, lynx, wildcat, red deer, golden eagle and the common viper. Many of the protected plant species have been put at risk by irresponsible tourism in the area. The classic approach is from the resort of Cheia, ascending via Pasul Bratocea, or from Cabana Muntele Roșu and Cabana Ciucaș, along trails requiring approximately 3-4 hours on foot. Sufficient water supplies are recommended, as the massif lacks springs above an altitude of 1,200-1,350 m, with the valleys carved into the conglomerates being dry.
