Tinovul Găina-Lucina Nature Reserve

The Tinovul Găina-Lucina nature reserve is a nationally protected area of botanical interest, located in Suceava County, on the territory of the commune of Moldova-Sulița, in the hamlet of Lucina, at an altitude of approximately 1,200 metres. Situated on the eastern slope of Obcinea Mestecănișului, in the Carpații Maramureșului și Bucovinei group, the reserve covers an area of just one hectare and was declared a protected area under Law no. 5/2000. It overlaps with the Natura 2000 site "Găina-Lucina" and lies close to other protected areas, including Cheile Lucavei and Răchitișul Mare. The bog formed through the gradual accumulation of peat over millennia, on a thick layer of Arctic-type peat moss (Sphagnum), making it a true natural archive of climatic change since the end of the last glaciation. The reserve's centrepiece is the dwarf birch (Betula nana), an Arctic glacial relict that survives here at Lucina at the southernmost point of its range in Europe — a presence of great scientific significance. The dwarf birch shrubs grow in association with species typical of acidic, nutrient-poor environments, such as cowberry, bilberry and bog willow, alongside sundew (Drosera), one of the few carnivorous plants in Romania's flora. The area surrounding the reserve, part of the traditional landscape of montane Bucovina, is also renowned for the stud farm at Lucina, one of the oldest centres for breeding Hucul horses in the country. Through the combination of rare glacial relicts, the palaeoclimatic value of the peat bog and the exceptional natural setting of the Obcine, Tinovul Găina-Lucina represents one of the most precious points of botanical interest in the Carpathians.
