Bădeana Forest Nature Reserve

Bădeana Forest Nature Reserve is a protected area of national interest (IUCN category IV, a forest and botanical reserve), located on the territory of Bădeana village, Tutova commune, in the south-west of Vaslui County, in the Tutova Hills, about 850 m from the Bârlad–Tecuci road (DN24A), at altitudes between 100 and 130 m. Established in 1973 and confirmed by Law no. 5 of 2000, the reserve today covers about 58 hectares (of the roughly 127 hectares originally protected). Its central feature is a steppe-type forest with a relict character, representative of the forest-steppe of southern Moldavia. The forest vegetation is dominated by downy oak (Quercus pubescens) and Turkey oak (Quercus cerris), alongside Hungarian oak, grey oak, Tatar maple (Acer tataricum) and manna ash (Fraxinus ornus) — species adapted to more pronounced aridity, a testimony to forests that once covered the area in warmer, drier climatic periods. The herbaceous flora is rich in steppe elements, such as spring pheasant's eye, dwarf almond and others, some with protected status. The designation as a site of community importance is also based on the European fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina), an amphibian protected under the Habitats Directive and listed on the IUCN red list. The reserve is worth visiting for the rarity of its relict steppe forest plant associations, hard to find elsewhere in Romania, and for its scientific value in the study of the historic vegetation of Moldavia.
