Dealul Cetății - Lempeș Nature Reserve
Dealul Cetății - Lempeș is a nationally protected natural area, classified as IUCN Category IV (habitat/species management area), located in the central-eastern part of the Bârsa Country, on the administrative territories of Sânpetru and Hărman communes, in the eastern part of Brașov County. The reserve covers 274.5 hectares and is crossed by county road DJ112A, which connects Bod to Hărman. The hill, also known as Cetății Hill, reaches an altitude of 704 m at Cetății Peak and marks the northern boundary of the Sânpetru Gate. It is made of sedimentary rock — calcareous microconglomerates, limestone, and sandstone dating from the Cretaceous — not volcanic rock, and its southeastern exposure and shelter within the depression have allowed xerophilous steppe vegetation, which appeared in the post-glacial period, to survive within an otherwise forested landscape. The reserve's flora includes rare and protected species such as spring pheasant's eye (Adonis vernalis), red feathered snake's head (Echium rubrum), iris (Iris hungarica and Iris caespitosa), Bulgarian hyacinth (Hyacinthella leucophaea), burning bush (Dictamnus albus), dwarf almond (Amygdalus nana), feather grass (Stipa capillata), and Stipa pulcherrima. Wooded areas include oak, sessile oak, small-leaved lime, manna ash, and black pine plantations. Wildlife is diverse, including deer, roe deer, wild boar, foxes, wildcats, squirrels, and birds of prey such as the common buzzard, raven, and booted eagle — all protected species. Nearby the reserve stand several tourist landmarks, including the fortified churches of Sânpetru (14th century), Hărman (13th century), Bod (13th century), and the fortified church complex of Prejmer. It is reached from Brașov via DN11 toward Hărman, then DJ112A toward Bod, or via DJ103 toward Sânpetru. The reserve is one of the most accessible recreation spots for local communities, alongside Mount Tâmpa, with themed trails suitable for families with children. Worth visiting for its rare post-glacial steppe flora diversity and protected wildlife, set within a geomorphology distinct from the rest of the Bârsa Depression.
