Balta Albă Nature Reserve
The Balta Albă Nature Reserve is a protected area of national interest, geological and zoological in character, located in the easternmost part of Buzău County, on the border with Brăila County, in the Câmpia Râmnicului — part of the north-eastern Câmpia Română. It covers an area of approximately 1,167 hectares, spanning the territories of the communes of Balta Albă (Buzău) and Grădiștea (Brăila), and was declared a protected area under Law no. 5/2000. The reserve encompasses a shallow natural saltwater lake, together with the peat bogs and meadows surrounding it. Owing to the high salinity and specific soil conditions, the area supports characteristic halophytic vegetation — including glasswort (Salicornia europaea) — which creates a distinctive landscape reminiscent of the Danube Delta. The lake and its surroundings constitute an essential habitat for numerous migratory, passage and resident bird species, providing suitable conditions for feeding, nesting and resting. The reserve is particularly recognised as one of Romania's important stopover and roosting sites for the red-breasted goose (Branta ruficollis), a globally endangered species, which further enhances its conservation value. The area forms part of the Natura 2000 site "Balta Albă–Amara–Jirlău". Beyond its ornithological and ecological significance, Balta Albă is also renowned for its sapropelic mud with therapeutic properties, which gave rise to one of Romania's best-known balneoclimatic resorts and is used in the treatment of rheumatic conditions as well as in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Through its combination of rich birdlife, rare saline ecosystems and balneary tradition, the reserve remains a site of outstanding interest for nature lovers and birdwatchers alike.
