Bratocea Reserve

Pasul Bratocea is a mountain pass located on DN1A, at an altitude of 1,263 m, marking the border between Prahova and Brașov counties, between Munții Ciucaș to the east and Munții Baiului to the west. It is also known among tourists as "Pasul Cheia", after the resort situated at the southern foot of the pass. It is one of the most spectacular crossings of the Carpații de Curbură, featuring steep switchbacks on the Prahova side and a gentler descent towards Brașov, offering wide panoramic views over the surrounding massifs. The pass has played a major strategic and commercial role throughout the centuries, serving as the principal direct route between Țara Românească and Transilvania. This was the route taken by ox-cart convoys carrying goods between Vălenii de Munte and Brașov, by the flocks of Transylvanian shepherds during their seasonal migrations — particularly those from the Săcele area — and by caravans trading in "brașovenie". The highest point of the pass is marked by a clearing surrounded by coniferous forests, with rest facilities. From the pass, marked trails lead towards Masivul Ciucaș, including routes to cabana Muntele Roșu and cabana Ciucaș. In winter, the pass may be temporarily closed due to heavy snowfall and blizzards, with road conditions significantly more difficult than in the warmer season. Access is possible from Brașov via DN1A through Săcele, or from Ploiești via Vălenii de Munte and Măneciu-Cheia, with a distance of approximately 65 km from Brașov.
