Alba Carolina Fortress

Alba Carolina Fortress is the emblem of Alba Iulia and one of the most valuable historical monuments in Romania. Built between 1715 and 1738 at the initiative of the Habsburg Empire, on the orders of Field Marshal Eugene of Savoy, the fortress was designed by Italian architect Giovanni Morando Visconti — who met his end here, struck down by plague, and rests in the Roman Catholic Cathedral within the precinct. The foundation stone was laid on 4 November 1715, and the result is the finest example of Vauban-style military architecture in Romania. The bastion system, featuring seven bastions, defensive ditches, and six monumental gates on an east–west axis, makes the fortress a masterpiece of Baroque military engineering. Each gate is adorned with sculptures, Atlant figures, and war trophies — an architectural spectacle unique in Romania. In its 300 years of existence, the fortress has been attacked only once. Beyond its military grandeur, however, Alba Carolina is the place where modern Romania was born: on 1 December 1918, in the Sala Unirii within the precinct, delegates from across Transylvania voted for union with Romania. Today, the Coronation Cathedral houses the tombs of King Ferdinand I and Queen Maria. Also within the fortress stands the "Saint Michael" Roman Catholic Cathedral — an 800-year-old Gothic monument where Iancu de Hunedoara rests — as well as the National Museum of the Union, holding over 200,000 historical artefacts. Fully restored between 2009 and 2014, the fortress has once again become one of the most visited destinations in Romania.
