Podgoria Huși

Podgoria Huși is one of the oldest and best-known wine-growing areas in Moldova, situated in Vaslui County around the municipality of Huși, on the hillsides of the Prut River basin. Viticulture in this area has a documented tradition of over 600 years, with the earliest records dating from the 14th century, during the reign of Alexandru cel Bun. The total area under vine cultivation in the wine-growing region exceeds 4,000 hectares, spread across hills at altitudes ranging from 150 to 350 metres, with predominantly south and south-east-facing slopes that favour the accumulation of solar heat. The predominant soils are chernozems and reddish-brown soils with a high calcium carbonate content, which give the wines produced in this area their distinctive organoleptic characteristics. The varieties cultivated include Fetească Albă, Fetească Regală, Busuioacă de Bohotin — a native variety with a controlled designation of origin specific to this region — Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Podgoria Huși is part of the Moldova wine region and produces tens of thousands of hectolitres of wine annually. Access is via DN24, from either Vaslui or Iași, with the municipality of Huși located approximately 60 km east of Vaslui and 100 km south-east of Iași. The wine-growing area is well worth a visit for the opportunity to taste native varieties, in particular Busuioacă de Bohotin, and to discover a traditional wine-producing system with documented medieval roots.
