Vama Veche Beach

Vama Veche is a locality within the town of Limanu, situated at the southernmost tip of the Romanian Black Sea coast, immediately north of the border crossing with Bulgaria, in Constanța County. Its reputation grew exponentially after 1990, when it became the preferred destination for those seeking an alternative to the organised and overcrowded resorts along the coast. Unlike the rest of the Romanian seaside, Vama Veche permits camping on the beach — the only locality on the Romanian coast where this practice is tolerated — and campfires, live music, and groups of young people celebrating until dawn are all part of the identity of the place. The beach has fine sand, a gradual entry into the water, and a generous width, with a predominantly sandy seabed and no rocky formations. A few hundred metres offshore lies a shipwreck visible to the naked eye from the beach, which has become an unofficial symbol of the resort and a point of reference for swimmers. Every year in August, Vama Veche hosts the Stufstock festival — the longest-running alternative music festival on the Romanian coast, with multiple stages set up on the beach. The village is also home to Romania's only beach library, "Plaja de Carte", where visitors can borrow books. Local terraces and restaurants, with wooden tables and chairs and reed-thatched umbrellas, serve specialities such as fried anchovies, mici, and fresh fish at prices lower than those found in the resorts further north. The border with Bulgaria lies a few hundred metres to the south, with the first undeveloped Bulgarian beaches situated approximately 6 km away.
