Piața Daciei Buzău

Piața Daciei, frequently referred to as Platoul Dacia, is the main public space in the centre of Buzău municipality and one of the city's best-known urban landmarks, functioning as a genuine "old centre" for community life. The square was laid out in the 1970s during the communist regime, with the works linked to the official visit of the head of state to Buzău in 1976. Its most distinctive feature is the paving: an expansive mosaic of granite slabs reproducing, on a monumental scale, the traditional embroidery pattern found on folk blouses (ii) specific to the Buzău region. Materials that were difficult to obtain at the time were used in its construction, including, according to local accounts, granite salvaged from the base of a dismantled statue in București. From an urban-planning perspective, the square is flanked by representative buildings of the city centre and constitutes the primary space for promenading, socialising, and hosting public events. In recent years, the space underwent an extensive rehabilitation project financed with European funds, which involved restoring the paving, installing ornamental fountains, green spaces and street furniture, as well as establishing a tourist information point. Piața Daciei thus combines its value as a testament to Romanian socialist urbanism with its current role as the modernised central space of the municipality.
