Pestera Dambovicioara

Peștera Dâmbovicioara is a karstic cavity located in the southern part of the Piatra Craiului Massif, on the left slope of the Dâmbovicioara valley, approximately 1 km north of the village of Dâmbovicioara, Argeș County, within the Rucăr-Bran Corridor, at the exit of Cheile Dâmbovicioarei. The cave was formed in the Jurassic-age limestones of the Piatra Craiului Massif through the erosive and dissolving action of the waters of the Dâmbovicioara stream; it is now a "dry" cave, as the stream that created it subsequently carved out a different bed. The cavity consists of a single, slightly branched gallery with a total length of approximately 555 m, a width of 3–4 m and a height of 4–5 m. Although modest in size compared to the great caves of the country, it is the longest in the area, as the relief and the nature of the rock are not conducive to large-scale galleries. Only the first approximately 250 m have been developed, lit and made accessible to visitors; the rest of the gallery is closed off with a metal grille to protect the bat colonies that shelter there. In the section where the gallery narrows, there is a chimney shaft approximately 10 m high, which provides a faint air current. The interior temperature remains relatively constant, between 10 and 12°C throughout the year, with moderate humidity. The interior features calcite formations with suggestive shapes, known by popular names such as "bear's paw", "eagle's wing", "snake's head" and "tiger's skin". The cave also holds significant historical and documentary value: it is the first cave in Muntenia and Oltenia to be mentioned in a scientific work, in the year 1767, and was already known as far back as the 16th century, having been used over the centuries as a shelter by local inhabitants and associated with numerous local legends.
