Sub Arini Park ("Under the Alders") lies in the city of Sibiu, along Bulevardul Victoriei. It is one of the largest and oldest parks in Romania and was established by a decision of the municipality in November 1856.
The park was laid out between 1856 and 1865 on an area of about 22 hectares, under the direction of engineer Wolfgang Seifried. In 1857-1858 the two main avenues were laid out and several tree species were planted, mainly alders, which gave the park its name. The dike was completed in 1859 and the bridge over the Trinkbach brook in 1860. The music pavilion was finished in 1898, and in 1938 the bust of Mihai Eminescu by sculptor Radu Moga was unveiled. The Municipal Stadium was inaugurated on the southern edge of the park in 1927.
Today the park holds 68 plant species, almost half of them exotic, and 95 species of resident or migratory birds. Besides alders, limes, chestnuts, plane trees and other native trees, some more than 150 years old, there are species from North America (blue spruce, eastern white pine, black walnut and box elder, hemlock, eastern red cedar, Douglas fir), from the Far East (Japanese barberry, ginkgo biloba) and Caucasian fir.
The park is a public space with free access. On 29 April 2026 the Centre Regional Development Agency signed with the local authorities the funding contract for the project „Amenajare Parc Sub Arini”, which provides, among other things, for a natural-looking pond on the Trinkbach brook, the redesign of the area around the Mihai Eminescu statue, the rehabilitation of paths and footbridges and the modernisation of the playgrounds.
