IOR Park

Alexandru Ioan Cuza Park, popularly known as Titan Park or IOR Park, is one of the largest green spaces in Bucharest, located in Sector 3's Titan district. Covering about 85 hectares, it is the city's second-largest park after Herăstrău. Its unofficial name, "IOR," comes from the Romanian Optics Enterprise (Întreprinderea Optică Română), an opto-mechanical equipment factory founded in 1936 near the park — not from any "leisure goods enterprise." The park was developed between 1965 and 1970, on the site of a former brick factory, to give residents of the new Titan district a green space near their homes. Excavation work uncovered underground springs that formed Lake Titan — the only natural lake around which a Bucharest park has been built. The lake is divided by the Liviu Rebreanu bridge into two basins, Titan 1 and Titan 2, and holds five islands (including Pensioners' Island and Dogs' Island, the latter specially set up for off-leash pet walking). The park's vegetation includes deciduous species — linden, oak, poplar, acacia — planted systematically, along with lawns and paved paths. Aquatic plants such as reeds and cattails shelter various waterfowl species, including wild ducks, coots, and cormorants. The park is also home to the "Descent of the Holy Spirit" Church, built of wood in Maramureș style between 1994 and 1996, standing 45 meters tall. The easiest access is via Titan metro station (line M1), right at the edge of the park, or by tram and bus lines running along Camil Ressu and Nicolae Grigorescu boulevards. The park has cycling paths, sports fields, a winter outdoor ice rink, and leisure areas. Worth visiting for the considerable size of its natural lake, the diversity of its urban birdlife, and its complete sports infrastructure — rare for a park within a densely populated sector of Bucharest.
