Simeria Dendrological Park is one of the largest and most valuable collections of trees and shrubs in Romania, situated on the left bank of the Mureș River, in the town of Simeria, Hunedoara County. The park covers an area of approximately 70 hectares and houses over 2,000 species and varieties of woody plants from all continents, placing it among the most important dendrological parks in Central and Eastern Europe. Founded in the second half of the 18th century by the noble Bethlen family, the park was expanded and reorganised in the 19th century, when it acquired a landscaped layout in the English style. During the interwar period, it came under the administration of the Romanian state and was transformed into a scientific forestry research institution. Notable species include specimens of Sequoiadendron giganteum, Taxodium distichum, Ginkgo biloba, Liriodendron tulipifera, and numerous species of oaks, beeches and exotic conifers, some of them over 200 years old. The park also features a network of pathways, artificial lakes and meadow areas that facilitate the exploration of the dendrological collection. The park is accessed from the centre of Simeria, at Strada Biscaria nr. 1, approximately 15 km from the municipality of Deva, along DN7. It is well worth visiting for the exceptional diversity of its dendrological collection and for the presence of rare tree specimens impossible to find in Romania's wild flora.
