Crâng Forest Buzău

Pădurea Crâng is the largest green space in the municipality of Buzău, covering approximately 100 hectares and located in the north-western part of the city. It was developed as a public park in the second half of the 19th century, on the site of a forest that had originally belonged to the Episcopia Buzăului and that gradually passed into the ownership of the municipality. The vegetation is dominated by deciduous species — pedunculate oaks, hornbeams and ash trees — with a well-developed shrub and herbaceous layer characteristic of the lowland forests of the Subcarpathian zone of Muntenia. The park contains a landscaped lake, a restaurant built in an architectural style specific to the Chiojdu area — a distinctive feature setting it apart from the rest of the city — a monument dedicated to the history of Buzău, a chess corner, playgrounds and sports grounds. In terms of fauna, the forest is home to species typical of lowland woodlands: woodpeckers, blackbirds, thrushes, foxes and hares. The park is administered by the Primăria Buzău and is open to the public throughout the year, free of charge. It is the main recreational area for the residents of Buzău and, on summer weekends, attracts families, sports enthusiasts and tourists passing through the city. It is well worth a visit for the rare opportunity it offers to experience a mature, well-preserved lowland forest ecosystem in the immediate vicinity of an urban centre, with impressively sized oak specimens.
