In the heart of the historic citadel of Alba Iulia, in Piața Cetății, stands the Obelisk erected in memory of Horea, Cloșca and Crișan, the three leaders of the great peasant uprising of 1784–1785. The monument, raised as a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of these heroes of the Romanian people, reminds today's generations of the righteous struggle waged against feudal oppression and social injustice. The uprising led by Horea, Cloșca and Crișan shook the foundations of the social order in Transilvania, mobilising tens of thousands of Romanian peasants against the Hungarian nobility and the oppressive system of the time. The tragic end of the three leaders, who were executed with great cruelty in the very city that now preserves their memory, lends the monument a profound emotional weight. The obelisk, with its simple yet imposing lines, integrates harmoniously into the architectural ensemble of the Alba Carolina citadel, becoming a place of reflection and contemplation for visitors who walk in the footsteps of Romanian history. The site invites meditation on the price of freedom and on the enormous sacrifices made by ordinary people in the name of justice and dignity. Every visitor who pauses before this monument leaves with a deeper understanding of the suffering and aspirations of the Romanian people of eighteenth-century Transilvania.
