Bukovina Village Museum

The Bukovina Village Museum is an open-air museum on the plateau of the Suceava Citadel, run by the Bukovina National Museum and officially founded in 1996 after beginnings in the 1970s. More than 30 buildings brought from villages across the county have been rebuilt on about 6 hectares, among them the wooden church from Vama (1783), the tavern from Șaru Dornei and the water mill from Mănăstirea Humorului.

Bukovina Village Museum
The Bukovina Village Museum lies in the eastern part of Suceava, on Strada Parcului, on the plateau beside the Suceava Citadel, and belongs to the Bukovina National Museum. The idea of an open-air museum for Bukovina dates from 1958, but the first field research began in 1971, when the municipal council allocated 1.7 hectares next to the citadel. By 1976 the farmstead from Straja, the house from Ostra and the Casa Roată from Câmpulung Moldovenesc had been rebuilt, after which work stopped. The project resumed in 1990, with the site enlarged to 6 hectares on the same location, and in 1996 the museum was established by government decision. From 1998 further vernacular buildings were acquired and are being rebuilt gradually; some have not yet been assembled. The final plan foresees about 80 monuments, laid out as a traditional Bukovina village. The complex is a listed historic monument (LMI code SV-IV-s-B-05694). The circuit includes more than 30 buildings: Niga's hut from Câmpulung Moldovenesc (the ticket point), the Negrea Varvara house from Roșu, Moș Iordache's tavern from Șaru Dornei (1928-1930), the Moldovan Gavril pottery workshop from Marginea, the water mill from Mănăstirea Humorului (around 1870), the Gavril Candrea house from Dorna Candrenilor, houses from Cacica, Volovăț, Vicovu de Jos and Rădășeni, a smithy, the fulling mill from Satu Mare (1900) and the school from Securiceni, opened in 2019. The wooden Church of the Ascension from Vama (1783), with its bell tower of 1787, was reconsecrated on 12 April 2009. The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday.
