Curtea de Argeș Municipal Museum

The Curtea de Argeș Municipal Museum is located at 2 Negru Vodă Street, in a historic monument building dating from 1896, in the centre of Curtea de Argeș, Argeș County — one of the oldest and most significant medieval settlements in Țara Românească. The city served as the first capital of Muntenia during the 14th and 15th centuries, a context that lends the museum's heritage collection particular historical significance. Opened in 1969, the museum holds over 14,000 items arranged across 7 chronologically organised galleries, of which more than 300 are part of the National Cultural Heritage. The collections comprise archaeological artefacts from the Neolithic, Dacian, Roman and Byzantine periods, medieval ceramics from the 13th–16th centuries, liturgical objects, weapons, jewellery and bronze statuettes of Argeș rulers. The numismatics section is one of the most representative, including Dacian, Roman, Byzantine and medieval coins, as well as the coin hoard of Hungarian king Carol Robert de Anjou — discovered in the area and linked to the importance of Curtea de Argeș as an economic and commercial centre of the era. The museum also preserves a facsimile of the Diploma of the Knights Hospitaller of 1247, a document attesting to the existence of the voivodate of Seneslau in this region. The ethnography section, housed in the Dumitru Norocea Memorial House, presents traditional Argeș interiors, folk costume pieces and pastoral objects. The museum operates in close connection with the city's medieval ensemble, which includes the Curtea Domnească and the Sfântul Nicolae Domnești Church (13th–14th centuries), structures built during the peak period of Muntenian statehood.
