The Mining Museum of Petroșani

The Mining Museum in Petroșani, located in the heart of the Valea Jiului, Hunedoara County, is the only museum in Romania dedicated to coal mining culture and technology — a unique institution that preserves the memory of one of the country's most important coal-bearing regions, with a mining tradition spanning over 150 years. The museum was founded in 1961 by decision of the regional authorities and moved to its current premises in 1966 — a historic monument building erected in 1920, formerly the first headquarters of the Societatea Anonimă Română Petroșani. The museum's collections document the evolution of hard coal extraction in the Valea Jiului basin through original mining machinery, protective equipment, measuring instruments, historical photographs and archival documents — over 98% of the exhibits being authentic pieces. One of the main attractions is a reconstruction of an underground working face, complete with the "colivia" (the miners' lift) and a miner at work, offering visitors an immersive perspective on the demanding labour carried out underground. Beyond the technical aspects, the museum also preserves the human stories — the sacrifices and lives of mining communities over the decades. The museum is also home to the first Numismatics Section in Romania, established in 1970, with a collection of over 4,000 pieces. The building's attic houses the Muzeul Muntelui — dedicated to mountain hiking and the history of winter sports in the area — and an ethnographic exhibition, rounding out the natural and cultural picture of the Valea Jiului. Recently restored with European funds, the museum provides a concrete and coherent account of an industrial sector that profoundly shaped Romania's economic and social history.
