The Petőfi Sándor Memorial Museum stands at 97 Muzeului Street in Albești, seat of Albești commune, about 800 metres from the E60 road and about 5 kilometres from Sighișoara. The complex consists of the museum house and a memorial park, laid out on the site where those killed in the battle of 31 July 1849 were buried. On 31 July 1849, during the Revolution of 1848-1849, a battle of the revolution was fought between Albești and Sighișoara, in which the poet Sándor Petőfi lost his life. Countess Luise Haller (1844-1909) donated the land containing the battle's large common grave and built the museum house in 1897-1898 in rustic style. After 1950 the museum was run by the History Museum of Sighișoara. The house has three rooms: the first shows documents about the poet's era, the second documents about his life, and the third a model of the battle of Albești with the troop positions, alongside documents, photographs and manuscripts. The park holds an obelisk, crowned by a turul bird holding a sword, the work of sculptor Miklós Köllő, and a statue of the poet. By the main road, near the Ispán well, a monument erected in 1969 marks the spot where, by tradition, the poet fell. Every year, on the last Sunday of July, a Petőfi commemoration is held here. The museum is a local institution owned by Albești Local Council and works with the Petőfi Sándor Cultural Association of Albești. The Petőfi Sándor monument in Albești is listed as a historic monument with code MS-III-m-B-16080.
