The Romanian Naval Museum

The National Museum of the Romanian Navy is the only museum institution in Romania dedicated exclusively to the history of military and civil navigation, located at 53 Strada Traian in Constanța. The building, erected in 1909, housed the Superior School of Marine, the first institution of higher education in Dobrogea. The museum opened in Constanța on 3 August 1969, with the core of its exhibition coming from Mangalia, where it had been operating since 1965, and was recognised as an institution of national importance, a Category I museum, and unique in the country. The total heritage numbers 37,800 items, organised into 33 collections distributed across 30 rooms covering an area of 10,775 m². The permanent exhibition is arranged thematically and chronologically, with sections devoted to navigation in antiquity (Greeks, Romans, vessels on the Pontus Euxinus and the fleet on the Ister), medieval navigation (the Byzantines, the Dobrujan despotate, the ships of Mircea cel Bătrân and Ștefan cel Mare), the Ottoman period, the first modern Romanian vessels and the War of Independence, and the history of the navy during the two World Wars. The ship model collection comprises 150 scale models of military and civil vessels of the Romanian fleet, while the uniform collection includes over 50 complete outfits and approximately 500 accessories. Unique collections include navigation instruments, lighthouse lenses and scale models, battle flags, ship propellers, nautical charts, and original ship plans. The museum's park displays representative original items in the open air: medieval anchors, naval and river mines from the two World Wars, anti-aircraft naval guns of various origins, and historic marine engines. The museum is worth visiting for the uniqueness of its collections and for the historical monument building that trained the first generation of Romanian naval officers. The National Museum of the Romanian Navy has been closed to visitors as of 14 July 2025 for consolidation works on the historical monument building, estimated to last 18 months. During the works, a branch operates in Mangalia and a temporary museum point in Constanța displaying the core pieces of the collection.
