"Stephen the Great" County Museum, Vaslui

The "Stephen the Great" County Museum in Vaslui is the county's main museum, located in the town of Vaslui, near the civic centre. Founded in 1974 and opened to the public in 1975, with its core exhibition modernised from 2018, the museum bears the name of the Moldavian prince whose career is closely tied to this area — near Vaslui, on 10 January 1475, the Battle of Podul Înalt (Vaslui) took place, one of Moldavia's most important victories over the Ottoman Empire, in which the army led by Stephen the Great defeated the Ottoman forces commanded by Suleiman Pasha. The museum's collections are organised in thematic sections: archaeology, medieval and modern history, numismatics, ethnography and art, covering a span from prehistory to the 20th century. The archaeology section includes pieces representative of the Cucuteni culture, renowned for its painted pottery, alongside artefacts from the Bronze and Iron Ages. A particular highlight is the depiction of the Battle of Vaslui through weapons, armour and a diorama, as well as the model of the "Princely Court" archaeological complex, which includes the Court and the Princely Church. The ethnography section documents the traditional occupations of south-eastern Moldavia — pottery, weaving and the local folk costume — while the memorial section evokes personalities linked to Vaslui County, such as the scientist Emil Racoviță, the actor Constantin Tănase, and the scholars Dimitrie Cantemir and Nicolae Milescu Spătarul, who had roots in this area. The museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions and cultural events. It is worth visiting as the main point of reference for the history and culture of Vaslui County, especially for the medieval context of the 1475 battle and for its rich Cucuteni collection.
