Buzău County Museum

The Buzău County Museum is the county's central museum, located on Bulevardul Nicolae Bălcescu no. 50, near the main entrance to Crâng Park. The building that houses it is a former girls' high school, built between 1931 and 1937 in the Neo-Romanian style, one of the most imposing buildings in the city and a listed historic monument. The museum's foundations were laid by the scholar Basil Iorgulescu, the first public collection of archaeological and historical pieces being assembled as early as 1895. The archaeology collections include artefacts from the Palaeolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age, discovered at sites such as Sărata Monteoru, Aldeni and Cârlomănești, representative of the Monteoru and Stoicani-Aldeni cultures and of the Geto-Dacian figurines of the Cârlomănești type. Among the notable pieces is a replica of the Pietroasele treasure, the "Hen with the Golden Chicks" (4th century AD), the originals being held at the National History Museum of Romania. The rock-cut vestiges of the Buzău Mountains and a rich numismatic collection are also on display. The museum also holds collections unique in Romania: the exhibition "Around the World on Foot. The Story of the 497 Pairs of Opinci", dedicated to the Buzău-born Dumitru Dan, the first Romanian globe-trotter recorded in the Guinness Book of Records, as well as a collection made accessible to visually impaired visitors. The "Numismatics" hall, opened in 2023, is the largest digitised exhibition in Romania. The museum is worth visiting for its archaeology collections, which document the continuous human habitation of the Buzău Subcarpathian area, and for its modern interactive displays.
