The Art Museum stands at 3 Mihai Eminescu Street in the town of Roman and is one of the units of the Neamț National Museum Complex.
The collection grew from a portrait of Stephen the Great painted in 1884 by Epaminonda Bucevschi for Bishop Melchisedec Ștefănescu of Roman. The art section was first housed in the same building as the History Museum, and in 1970, for lack of space, it moved into Casa Roiu, where its first exhibition opened that same year. Casa Roiu is a late 19th-century neoclassical building built for the lawyer and member of parliament Constantin Roiu (1873-1944).
The museum holds more than 1,000 works of painting, graphic art, sculpture and decorative art, acquired through donations, transfers and purchases, part of which is shown in six rooms. The main exhibition focuses on artists connected with Roman, whether born, trained or active in the town, among them Gheorghe Iliescu, Corina Lecca and Nicu Enea. Two major donations are the 80 works by four generations of the Ciurdea-Steurer family and the 30 works given by the architect Marcel Locar, including pieces by Theodor Pallady, Camil Ressu and Nicolae Tonitza. The museum also holds temporary exhibitions.
The museum belongs to the Neamț National Museum Complex, under the Neamț County Council.
