Cucuteni Museum Piatra Neamt

The Cucuteni Eneolithic Art Museum "Gheorghe Dumitroaia" is located in the city of Piatra Neamț, the seat of Neamț County, on Strada Ștefan cel Mare, in the city centre, near the Curtea Domnească complex. Inaugurated on 24 June 2005, on the city's anniversary day, it is the first museum in Romania dedicated exclusively to the Cucuteni civilization and operates as a component of the Museum of History and Archaeology in Piatra Neamț — the leading institution in the country that has researched and promoted the Cucuteni heritage for over seven decades. The Cucuteni civilization, which developed during the 5th–4th millennia BC across a vast territory encompassing eastern Romania, the Republic of Moldova and part of Ukraine, is considered one of the most advanced Neolithic and Eneolithic cultures of ancient Europe, and is also the most extensively studied prehistoric civilization on the continent. It takes its name from the village of Cucuteni, near Iași, where the first remains were discovered in 1884. The museum in Piatra Neamț presents the two fundamental components of Cucuteni art: decorative art, represented by richly ornamented vessels, and figurative art, illustrated by anthropomorphic statuettes and zoomorphic figurines. The exhibited pieces impress with their refinement: the ceramics are renowned for their characteristic tricolour decoration — white, red and black —, for their geometric and spiral motifs, and for the advanced firing technique, at temperatures of up to approximately 1,000°C, unique in a European Neolithic context. The museum houses the most varied Precucuteni–Cucuteni–Trypillia collection in south-eastern Europe, featuring prestigious artefacts of artistic and cultic value. Recognised at both national and international level, the museum has presented its pieces at numerous exhibitions across several continents, making it one of the most important cultural attractions in Moldova and an essential reference point for understanding European prehistory.
