Colți Amber Museum

The Amber Museum in Colți, Buzău County, is the only museum in Romania dedicated solely to native amber, housed in a vernacular-style building in the village of Colți, at the foot of the Buzău Subcarpathians. The area is one of the most important amber deposits in Europe, known as rumanite (or Buzău succinite) — a name given by the geologist Oscar Helm and scientifically established in 1902 by Gheorghe Munteanu-Murgoci. Rumanite is estimated to be 40 to 60 million years old and stands out through its more than 160 colours and shades, from honey-yellow to red-brown and black, the latter variety being unique in the world. The museum was set up in a house built in the local architectural style in 1973–1974 and inaugurated on 14 June 1980, as an external branch of the Buzău County Museum. Following an extensive refurbishment completed in 2020, it became one of the most modern museums in the country. The collection includes amber nuggets, jewellery (rings, earrings, pendants, bead necklaces), traditional extraction and processing tools (a wooden lathe, hammers, miners' lamps, a pickaxe), as well as palaeofauna exhibits from the county museum's heritage. Colți amber has a remarkable history: presented at the 1867 Universal Exhibition in Paris, it earned Romania a gold medal. Today, the museum and the nearby geological reserve are part of the UNESCO "Buzău Land" Geopark, recognised in 2022. The museum is worth visiting for one of the most complete collections of rumanite in the world and for the story of a local craft centuries old.
