The Gold Museum in Brad

The Gold Museum in Brad is one of the most significant collections of gold mineralogy in Europe, housed in the former Tribunal building of the city of Brad, Hunedoara County, constructed in the 19th century. The institution holds over 2,000 pieces, of which approximately 1,000 are specimens of native gold and associated minerals, originating primarily from deposits exploited in the Munții Apuseni, a region recognised as one of the richest gold-bearing districts in Central Europe. The collection includes remarkable specimens of native gold in various crystalline forms — dendrites, wires, and leaf-like formations — as well as minerals such as chalcopyrite, pyrite, and galena, extracted from the mines at Roșia Montană, Săcărâmb, Zlatna, and the surroundings of Brad. The most valuable piece in the collection is a native gold nugget weighing approximately 4 kg, considered one of the largest in the world on display in a museum. The museum operates under the auspices of the Hunedoara County Council and is open to the public Monday through Friday, with varying hours depending on the season. Brad is accessible via DN76, from Deva (approximately 60 km) or from Oradea. The museum is located at 3 Str. Independenței, in the city centre, a few minutes' walk from any central point. It is well worth a visit for the uniqueness of its native gold collection and for the historical context of millennia of mining in the Apuseni.
