Munții Codru-Moma is a mountain group in the western part of Munții Apuseni, belonging to the Western Carpathians chain, reaching altitudes of 1,112 m at Vârful Pleșu, the highest point of the entire massif. The range extends across Arad and Bihor counties, in the south-eastern extremity of Bihor county; the Arad-facing slope stretches between the localities of Moneasa and Dezna, while the north-eastern slope reaches several communes in the Beiuș area. The massif is composed predominantly of crystalline schists and limestone, with its geological structure giving rise to a great variety of relief forms. On the limestone substrate, a rich karst landscape has developed, featuring caves, sinkholes, poljes and gorges; one of the most representative areas is Carstul Vașcăului, located in the eastern part of the massif. Beech and oak forests cover most of the slopes, providing habitat for populations of Carpathian red deer, wild boar, brown bear and wolf. The mountains are crossed by marked hiking trails, and the resort of Moneasa, situated at their foot, serves as the main starting point for excursions to the massif's ridges and natural landmarks, including the peaks Izoiu and Osoiul Mare. The area is part of a Natura 2000 site of community importance, designated for the conservation of forest habitats and the species characteristic of this corner of the Apuseni.
