Esmahan Sultan Mosque Mangalia

The Esmahan Sultan Mosque is the oldest Muslim place of worship in Romania in continuous use, located at Strada Oituz nr. 1, in the historic centre of the municipality of Mangalia, Constanța County. It was built in 1575 by Esmahan Sultan, daughter of Sultan Selim II (1566–1574) and wife of Grand Vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pasha — one of the most influential women of the Ottoman Empire and granddaughter of the famous Hurrem Sultan. The building was erected on the outskirts of the ancient city of Callatis, most likely on the site of a Roman amphitheatre, and is the only medieval structure on the territory of Mangalia. The construction material is dressed stone recovered from the ruins of the Callatis fortress, worked by Turkish stonemasons. One remarkable technical feature: the stone blocks were joined without any mortar, bound exclusively by steel clamps cast in place in specially made holes. The architecture blends Greek and Turkish styles with Moorish influences, featuring a porch supported by oak columns and wooden balustrades. In the mosque's courtyard stands a ritual fountain made from an ancient Roman sarcophagus, surrounded by Ottoman funerary steles. The cemetery within the grounds, with a total ensemble area of 5,000 sq m, contains graves with Arabic inscriptions over three centuries old. Following a period of deterioration that led to its closure to visitors, the mosque was fully restored thanks to a donation of approximately one million euros from a Turkish businessman. Today it functions as an active place of worship for the Turco-Tatar community of Mangalia, estimated at over 3,100 faithful, and can be visited daily between 9:00 and 18:00. It is well worth a visit for its uniqueness in Romania's monumental landscape and for its historical layering — Roman, Ottoman and modern — concentrated within 5,000 sq m.
