Iezer-Păpușa Massif – Vârful Păpușa
Munții Iezer-Păpușa is a crystalline massif in the Southern Carpathians, Argeș County, with its highest point at Vârful Roșu (2,469 m), followed by Vârful Iezerul Mare (2,462 m) and Vârful Păpușa (2,391 m). The massif extends between the Dâmbovița River to the east and Râul Doamnei to the west, along a main ridge of over 40 km. Lacul Iezeru Mare, the only glacial lake in the massif, lies at an altitude of 2,135 m. The massif is known for its gently rounded ridge and the accessibility of its trails in all seasons.

Full description: Munții Iezer-Păpușa is a mountain massif belonging to the southern group of the Southern Carpathians, located in Argeș County, between the Dâmbovița River to the east and Râul Doamnei to the west. The highest point is Vârful Roșu (2,469 m), situated in the centre of the massif, followed by Vârful Iezerul Mare (2,462 m) and Vârful Păpușa (2,391 m). The main ridge exceeds 40 km in length, with an average altitude of over 2,200 m, interrupted by Spintecătura Păpușii — a deep col separating the Iezerul Mare and Păpușa compartments. The geological structure is dominated by Precambrian crystalline schists, giving the relief a massive character, with steep slopes toward the adjacent valleys and gently undulating surfaces on the plateaus. Munții Iezer-Păpușa is known for its gently rounded ridge, considered the most accessible in the Southern Carpathians, with no major avalanche risk in winter, provided the steep slopes are avoided. Lacul Iezeru Mare, the only glacial lake in the massif, sits at an altitude of 2,135 m in a glacial cirque beneath Vârful Iezerul Mare. Near the lake stands Refugiul Iezer (2,165 m). On the opposite slope, below Vârful Roșu, lie two smaller glacial lakes — the Boarcăș lakes. Within the massif is also found the Râușor reservoir, formed behind the Râușor Dam. Alpine vegetation includes dwarf pine, mountain willow, green alder, Swiss stone pine, mountain peony and heather, with grasslands of Festuca supina and Carex curvula. The fauna includes chamois, brown bears, wolves and golden eagles. Access is possible from the locality of Rucăr, via the Rucăr-Bran corridor, or from Câmpulung-Muscel, along the tributary valleys of the massif, or from Munții Făgăraș via Colții Cremenii and Crucea Ateneului.
